Responsibilities

Administration & Operations

  • Manage and maintain SQL Server instances hosted on Windows EC2, including clustered and Availability Group configurations.
  • Support and maintain PostgreSQL RDS instances in AWS.
  • Perform regular SQL Server patching, version migrations, and availability group failover testing.
  • Monitor database health and performance using performance monitoring tools such as; SQL Sentry, SQL Agent alerts, CloudWatch, and DataDog dashboards.
  • Ensure TDE (Transparent Data Encryption) environments remain healthy and compliant.
  • Manage SQL Agent jobs, alerts, and job history for all production and pre-production systems.

Performance & Optimization

  • Conduct index and query tuning, including execution plan analysis and wait statistics review.
  • Perform server-level performance diagnostics (I/O bottlenecks, PAGEIOLATCH, CPU spikes, parameter sniffing, etc.).
  • Collaborate with development teams to provide performance recommendations and identify query optimization opportunities.

Security & Compliance

  • Manage database-level permissions and access controls following internal least-privilege standards.
  • Participate in periodic PCI and FISMA/FedRAMP compliance audits as they relate to database controls.
  • Support auditing and logging for sensitive (PII) data environments.

Backup & Recovery / Disaster Recovery

  • Oversee backup configurations and retention policies.
  • Perform disaster recovery validation and availability group failover testing.
  • Manage RDS snapshots, point-in-time recovery, and restore procedures.

Deployment & CI/CD Support

  • Support schema and object deployments using Redgate SQL Source Control and SQL Change Automation.
  • Troubleshoot deployment issues in TeamCity pipelines; assist in transition to GitLab CI/CD.
  • Validate schema synchronization, environment drift, and rollback plans.

Scripting & Automation

  • Develop and maintain basic PowerShell scripts for administrative automation and reporting.
  • Write and optimize SQL/T-SQL scripts for maintenance, troubleshooting, and ad-hoc analysis.
  • Bonus: Exposure to Python, bash, or automation scripting within AWS environments.

Cloud & Systems Integration

  • Work within AWS GovCloud, managing RDS, EC2, and S3 integrations for database operations.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure teams on IAM roles, instance sizing, and snapshot policies.
  • Assist in the design and testing of cross-region disaster recovery and backup solutions.

 

**The US base salary range for this position is $93,440 - $116,813 + bonus + benefits.  Our salary ranges are determined by role and level.  The range displayed on each job posting reflects the compensation target for the role across all US locations.  Individual pay is determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.  Beyond offering a competitive total rewards package, we offer various opportunities to support team member growth and success**.

 

Qualifications

Required

  • 5-7 years of professional experience as a Database Administrator (SQL Server focus).
  • Proven experience supporting SQL Server 2016+ in clustered and high-availability environments.
  • Strong understanding of T-SQL, indexing strategies, and performance tuning.
  • Experience with AWS RDS (PostgreSQL) administration and monitoring.
  • Familiarity with Redgate SQL Source Control or other schema deployment tools.
  • Working knowledge of Availability Groups, TDE, and PII-compliant data handling.
  • Ability to manage multiple environments (Dev, QA, Staging, Prod) under change control processes.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.

Preferred / Bonus Skills

  • Hands-on experience with SQL Sentry and/or CloudWatch / DataDog.
  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines (TeamCity, GitLab, or similar).
  • Familiarity with Redgate SQL Source Control or other schema deployment tools.
  • Familiarity with PostgreSQL tuning and monitoring on RDS.
  • Understanding of FISMA, FedRAMP, or PCI compliance controls.
  • Experience with SSRS installation and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of AWS IAM, S3, snapshot management, and cross-account role usage.
